Mica is layered silicate mineral containing water, divided into muscovite, biotite and lepidolite. Generally the Mohs hardness of Mica is 2-3.5. The bottom surface is completely parallel cleavage and the mica can be stripped into a transparent sheet with elasticity. Mica has a thermal expansion coefficient, good thermostability, gloss, anti-corrosion for acid and alkali, good insulation, non-flammable, good flexibility and toughness, strong adhesion and so on stable chemically features.
Currently, India accounts for 90 % of the world reserves of mica and the export volume accounted for 60% of total world exports. Secondly, China, the United States, Australia and other countries is the major regional of mica production.
The area of mica more than 4 square centimetre is called mica splitting, which beneficiation methods include, hand-selected, friction election and shape election. The area of mica less than 4 square centimetre is called clastic mica, its beneficiation methods include, flotation and dry blowing. Flotation is based on the different physical and chemical properties of the surface of mica and gangue for sorting. By mica ore crushing and mica ore grinding, the mica monomer dissociate from each other. In the role of agents, mica became foam products and separated from the gangue.
Mica ore beneficiation is the enrichment process for raw material mica. As the mica crystals without defects is larger, the higher of the economic value. Therefore, we should as much as possible to protect the natural mica crystals from destruction in the mica ore beneficiation process. Customarily, the beneficiation method is flotation, because it is easy to operate, convenient and simple. The most used in industry is muscovite, followed by phlogopite. It is widely used in building materials, extinguishing and protection, fire extinguishing agents, welding, plastics, electrical insulation, paper, asphalt paper, rubber, pearlescent pigments and other chemical industries. Lepidolite is the main raw material extraction of lithium.
Due to the success of large crystals of synthetic mica, the world's demand for large mica will be gradually reduced. A large amount of natural mica mining will reduce year by year, while the demand for mica fragments will continue to increase. It is estimated that the world demand for sheet mica is continued to decline at an annual rate of 4.6 percent, while demand for mica fragments grow at an average annual rate of 1.5% percent.
